The Clan name is thought to have originated from the Gaelic word 'Ceannaideach' meaning 'ugly head', the somewhat blunt nickname of Roland, one of the earliest of the Kennedys.

In 1509, Sir David Kennedy was made Earl of Cassillis. This lasted for a short time only however, as he was amoung the flower of the Scottish nobility to die at Flodden in 1513. His successors were not to achieve much more as Gilbert Kennedy was to be assassinated by Sir Hugh Campbell in 1527, while the third Earl died of poisoning at Dieppe.

Castle Kennedy was built by the Earls of Cassilis in 1607, and near Culzean is where the Earl of Cassilis is said to have roasted the Abbot of Crossraguel in an attempt to make him surrender abbey lands in 1507.
